The Value of an Employee…err Human
“No one is indispensable” is what we have grown up with so we decide to part ways with our current employer, nothing really changes for the employer, the organisation; the organisation continues to move forward irrespective.
Nothing is ever permanent so moving between cities, towns, organisations is but normal. What is also not permanent is the mark one leaves as human memory is short. So one might argue that it doesn’t really matter how much time an individual spends in an organisation, or how soon he leaves, it’s fine to not be emotional about it.
Well, the human and the emotional factors are something I can never ignore. I can leave an organisation, leave a city but there will be certain interactions and associations that I will carry forward. After all, we are all human beings, a mixed baggage of emotions and memories.
It is but natural for us to feel betrayed when we have spent our efforts on someone and he/she decides to move ahead for better opportunities. It could be his personal circumstances or it could simply mean he looking for greener pastures. Much that it will disappoint me, I think i will spend a few minutes talking to her/him trying to understand the reason. I may or not be able to solve his issues or make her stay but I will not regret later that i have not tried.
I was so surprised recently when someone i otherwise looked up to, had a totally different outlook on this. He refused to ask his employee the reason for leaving and said he wouldn’t, ending the relationship in the process.
Are the people we work with meant to stay with us as long as our ends are met. I don’t think so. No matter what we choose to do ahead, the people who were close once should be the ones we should be able to reach out to in the future.
